This topic affects the decision making process of some of our employees. We often tend to build an imaginary obstacle around the 30-40 age range and believe that it is not possible to change our career path at that stage of our lives. According to statistics, we find that most employees in the age of 30-40 are dissatisfied and do not feel content with their jobs. Most of the ones thinking of a career shift are, however, reluctant to make a move as they feel it is too late for it.
Employees are encouraged to believe that there is a certain age limit to join a company or shift careers. Some of you may feel that by the age of 30 you need to figure life out and settle down but if you are unhappy with what you are doing at the moment and you are determined to shift careers, then now is the best time. Don’t let anyone tell you that you are too old for it. There is absolutely no such thing as too old!
Focus on skills, not years
Why focus on the age and numbers when you can blow your employer’s mind with the myriad of your talents, skills and experience. Did you achieve anything extraordinary during your previous experience? Make sure to add it to your CV. Hiring managers are not really interested in your age. They will rather be impressed by your skills and the vast experience you have gained throughout the years. Decision making is one of the skills that employers value the most from senior employees.
As the vice president of global talent acquisition at American Express, Oriana Vogel, states “Don’t view your age or your experience as a liability. It’s a benefit to companies to have a multi-generational workforce,”
Show that you’re tech-fluent
One of the best ways to impress your prospective employer is to show that you master new technologies and that you are adapting to new and evolving trends. This will highlight you as an ideal candidate along with the years of experience that you gained during your work history. Choose your social media channels wisely. Maintaining a LinkedIn profile is definitely a must have.
Update your CV
This is an additional advantage that will help you grab the attention of your potential future employers. Consider styling up your resume by adding images and using a modern layout. This shows that you are keen about adapting to changes and risks. Risk-taking is a skill developed by entrepreneurs and this means that you are willing to walk a further mile to innovate and generate ideas which are unique to the organization. This will surely help you emerge as an irresistible candidate.
Don’t be afraid to showcase your knowledge
If you keep doubting about your ability to get that new position as a senior employee, then we’ve got bad news for you. Instead of contemplating if your hiring manager is going to hire you or whether you deserve that spot or not, you need to be confident and showcase your skills. Confidence is undoubtedly the most attractive and the most convincing trait one needs to develop. Don’t let your age affect your confidence and your level of performance. Focus on what makes you the perfect candidate and highlight what you are capable of offering to the company and what makes you stand out from the rest of the candidates waiting in line.
Last but not least and regardless your age, before making a life changing decision, consider analyzing the pros and cons of shifting into a whole new career. It is crucial to do so in order to avoid any confusions and negative consequences. Your prospective employers may require an explanation as to why you want to shift careers. Therefore, be prepared. Do not make career based decisions when you are going through a rough patch in life as the results of it may not look pretty at the end of the tunnel.
However, if you are truly convinced that changing your career path is the way to go, then it is definitely the right time to do it!
