The company was founded in 1996 by Krishan (Kris) Canekeratne along with his wife Tushara. Kris grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka where he was the national champion of golf in the ‘under 16’ category. He came from an affluent background where his father owned one of the biggest conglomerates of the island nation, Rowlands, a holdover from the days of the British Raj. After finishing high school Kris went to the US for higher studies. He joined Syracuse University for studying Computer Sciences.
After completing his studies he married Tushara in 1989 in Colombo. Tushara was his childhood love who had been studying mathematics in the UK. In the early 1990s Kris was working for a startup in New York. His new work made him frequently travel to Sri Lanka. During his business travels he realized that the outsourcing industry was mostly involved in mundane tasks like updating and maintaining IT systems. This represented him with an opportunity to take advantage of the huge talent pool existing in Sri Lanka, which was not being involved in anything intellectually stimulating. Hence the birth of Virtusa.
Virtusa, like any other startup had a modest beginning. The company was started by the couple in the outskirts of Boston, consisting of six engineers working from their home’s basement and 10 engineers working from Kris grandfather’s ancestral home in Colombo. Ever since the company came into existence, ambition was the fuel that kept it running. Human resource was always given the most importance. And the culture is still the same, making Virtusa careers an excellent one for one to start with.

During that time business was constantly changing and the company was always quick in adapting itself, thus the changes in name.
